Water and Wet
A few days ago, I stood under the shower, eyes closed, letting the water cascade over me. The warmth wrapped around me, liquid fingers tracing paths down my skin. Each drop drummed against my shoulders, a steady, rhythmic downpour. I wasn’t thinking about much—just enjoying the simple pleasure of being immersed.
Then, suddenly, it struck me—water is wet.
Of course, it is. It always is. It can’t be anything else. There’s no such thing as dry water. The moment water touches something, wetness follows. It’s automatic. Unavoidable.
And in that instant, I realized—faith is the same way.
"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." (Romans 10:17, ESV)
Faith isn’t a rare phenomenon or something we must force into existence. It flows. It follows the Word of God as naturally as wet follows water.
The Flow of Faith
When I turned the shower knob, the water obeyed. It gushed forth, covering me, soaking me without resistance. It didn’t hesitate. It didn’t struggle to be what it was.
So why do we struggle to believe?
If faith comes by hearing, all we need to do is position ourselves under the flow of the Word. It will come. It must come. Because faith is not something we wring out of ourselves by effort—it is the natural result of hearing the living voice of God.
The Dryness of Distance
But what happens when we step away?
I turned off the shower and reached for the towel. Almost immediately, the wetness began to fade. The warmth that moments ago enveloped me was now retreating, leaving behind a remarkable trace of where it had been.
That’s how it is when we disconnect from the Word.
When we stop hearing, listening, and soaking in Scripture, our faith begins to dry up—not because our faith is gone, but because we’ve moved away from the source.
Step Back Into the Stream
If you’ve felt dry lately and wondered where your faith has gone, let me remind you: faith is not a mystery. It’s not something reserved for a select few who have somehow figured out the formula.
It’s water and wet.
It’s Word and faith.
Just step back under the stream. Open the Word, listen to it, and let it wash over you. As sure as water drenches, faith will rise.
It always does.
